04:33 < rah_> is make() considered part of the language spec itself, or just
a special method outside the spec?
04:34 < rah_> i can find references to make() in the spec, but not its ebnf
04:36 < skelterjohn> it's not just a special method, since it has variable
return types, takes a type as a parameter, and can have either one or two
parameters. regular methods can't do any of those things
04:36 -!- Olathe [n=Olathe@173-19-108-228.client.mchsi.com] has joined #go-nuts
04:36 * CodeBlock is surprised the topic says to use pastebin.com - gist has
syntax highlighting for Go already, pastebin.com does not. :/
04:36 -!- diltsman_ [n=diltsman@64.122.18.77] has quit []
04:37 < rah_> ok, so it looks like a method, but it doesn't quite follow the
built in rules about what a method can take
04:37 < rah_> i was noticing that as well, codeblock
04:37 < CodeBlock> rah_: ;)
04:37 < CodeBlock> meh what do I know - i've been coding Go for about an
hour, literally. Very new to it, but kind of liking it so far :)
04:37 < rah_> plus the fact that gist pastes are full git repos is pretty
cool :)
04:38 < skelterjohn> it should suggest gopaste.org
04:38 < rah_> i've got a week under my belt of go, but i feel like i've been
only learning it for 20 minutes still
04:38 < CodeBlock> skelterjohn: 503
04:38 < CodeBlock> rah_: is that good or bad? :P
04:38 < rah_> well
04:38 < rah_> the core syntax is not hard to grasp
04:38 < rah_> actually very refreshingly simple
04:39 < rah_> but grasping how to do things in a 'go' fashion still escapes
me
04:39 < skelterjohn> example?
04:39 < rah_> like, the go sieve is all of 35 lines, and scales to multiple
processors
04:40 < rah_> but i still find myself scratching my head when i read it,
thinking things like 'how can it make that many channels and not die'
04:40 < skelterjohn> channels and goroutines are extremely lightweight
04:41 < rah_> which is very cool.. threads make me twitch, and message
passing looks like a very welcome alternative
04:41 < rah_> but figuring out the best ways to harness all the pieces is
taking some getting used to
04:41 < skelterjohn> message passing isn't an alternative to threads.. it's
an alternative to shared memory+mutex for communication :)
04:42 < rah_> well, yes
04:42 < skelterjohn> i did some fun examples with concurrent go
04:42 < skelterjohn> code.google.com/p/goconc
04:42 < rah_> i guess i mean more the shared memory/mutex model
04:42 < skelterjohn> you may might be interested
04:42 < rah_> i will take a look - thank you
04:43 < skelterjohn> it's a bit light on explanation though
04:43 < rah_> the build time still makes me giddy, haha

04:45 < rah_> would it be fair to say channels could probably benefit from
generics?
04:45 < skelterjohn> absolutely
04:45 -!- gnuvince [n=vince@64.235.212.11] has joined #go-nuts
04:45 < rah_> ok, i was leaning that way :) thanks
04:45 < skelterjohn> for instance, chain.go in goconc
04:46 < rah_> haha, thats what i was reading
04:46 < skelterjohn> it chains two channels together
04:46 < skelterjohn> ah :)
04:46 < rah_> so right now you just have to lean a bit on trust
04:47 < skelterjohn> ?
04:47 < rah_> that people won't do silly things like try to chain chan<-
string with <-chan int
04:47 -!- Macpunk [n=macpunk@cpe-72-177-27-209.austin.res.rr.com] has joined
#go-nuts
04:47 < skelterjohn> no trust required. to get the string or int out of it,
you have to type assert
04:48 < skelterjohn> and error checking is performed at that point
04:48 < rah_> ah, okay
04:48 < rah_> but it is runtime, correct?
04:48 < skelterjohn> yes
04:48 < rah_> okay
04:48 < skelterjohn> which is why generics would be nice
04:48 < rah_> i was actually thinking about making something like chain,
that took a func as well
04:48 < skelterjohn> do that assert at compile time
04:48 < rah_> yes
04:49 < rah_> ..oh, you beat me to it
04:49 < rah_> map.go
04:49 < skelterjohn> heh
04:50 < rah_> cool stuff.. thanks for sharing :)
04:51 < skelterjohn> np
04:52 < Macpunk> I have a really nooby question. How can one create a
literal slice? You can do an array like so: [...]byte{61, 73, 64, 66}, but this
is of type [4]int. Is it possible to create a slice instead?
04:52 < Macpunk> If I've overlooked this in the Go tutorials I'm terribly
sorry.
04:53 -!- vizzord [n=exn@195.49.206.202] has joined #go-nuts
04:53 < rah_> does []byte{61,73,64,66} work?
04:54 < skelterjohn> var theSlice []byte = []byte{1,2,3} ?
04:54 < Macpunk> Embarrassing. I was looking *right* next to that in
"Effective Go". Thank you very much. :-)
04:55 < rah_> nothing wrong with asking questions :)
04:55 < rah_> we don't bite
04:55 < skelterjohn> oh, does saying "[...]" instead of "[]" make it an
array rather than a slice?
04:55 < rah_> yes
04:56 < rah_> is make(<-chan int) nonsensical? it seems to be valid for
compilation, but gofmt dies on it
04:57 < skelterjohn> hum. i can't think of a way to use it
04:57 < rah_> okay, thanks
04:57 < skelterjohn> declaring a chan as <-chan or chan<- is for when
you are restricting use of an existing channel
04:58 < skelterjohn> if you instantiate a read-only channel...
04:58 < skelterjohn> well
04:58 < rah_> it compiles and runs... but it pretty much amounts to a
channel that never makes anything
04:58 < skelterjohn> you won't ever read anything from it, cause no one can
write to it
04:58 < rah_> so i guess it's not so bad gofmt balks :)
04:58 < Macpunk> Hehe, thanks again. Now I can't seem to figure out why
md5.Sum() is returning odd results. More investigation is needed.
04:59 < rah_> what kind of odd results?
04:59 -!- quag [n=quag@121-98-81-61.bitstream.orcon.net.nz] has joined #go-nuts
05:01 < Macpunk> Well I don't know that they're unexpected. It's much more
likely I'm writing really, really bad Go code.
05:02 < rah_> hey, that's my job
05:03 < Macpunk> Lol, nice. :-P
05:05 < Macpunk> gopaste is down for me, so I'm using codepad:

05:05 < Macpunk> I'm just learning Go so I'm running through what I had
hoped to be a simple example. :P
05:05 < rah_> lessee, i'll try to help, but i may end up drawing a blank :)
05:06 < skelterjohn> seems straightforward. assuming that you really have
got the correct hash to compare against...

05:09 < Macpunk> I realized what I did, lmao. I converted the ASCII to hex
and then used decimal literals.
05:09 < Macpunk> Wow I need to go to bed.
05:09 < rah_> haha
05:09 < rah_> no problem
05:09 < rah_> i was trying to figure out what =I@B meant

14:39 < Guest27039> it couldn't find the 'gomake'
14:39 < Guest27039> any help????
14:39 < Guest27039> hello!!!

14:40 < usa> gomake should be in $GOBIN or ~/bin if you don't have GOBIN
defined
14:41 < toji> i have GOBIN defined
14:41 < usa> Is gomake in there?
14:42 < Guest57028> yes it is
14:42 < Guest57028> is GOBIN defined at /home/me/bin
14:42 < Guest57028> or just as /bin
14:42 < Guest57028> ????
14:43 < usa> do you use a shell that requires you to export variable (the
answer is almost certainly yes) and if so have you exported GOBIN?
14:43 < Guest57028> yes i defined it in bashrc
14:44 < Guest57028> i used export $GOBIN=$HOME/bin
14:45 < ShadowIce> Guest57028: add $GOBIN to your PATH
14:46 < usa> Do you see the correct output from 'echo $GOBIN'?
14:47 < tor7> Guest57028: you used the wrong syntax, you have a $ sign too
many in that export line
14:47 < tor7> export GOBIN=$HOME/bin
14:52 < Guest57028> @tor7:yeah i did that
14:53 < Guest57028> i'm sorry i'm a complete noob
14:53 < tor7> export PATH=$PATH:$GOBIN after that too?
14:53 < Guest57028> could you plz tell me how to add it to the path?
14:53 < usa> Just type what tor7 told you
14:54 < usa> The "export PATH=$PATH:$GOBIN"
14:55 < usa> (Strictly speaking you don't need the word "export" here, but
we will not worry about that)
14:56 < Guest57028> yes i did PATH=$PATH:$GOBIN
14:56 < Guest57028> make[1]: Leaving directory

14:56 < Guest57028> this is what it gives
14:56 < usa> OK, what does 'echo $PATH' and 'echo $GOBIN' say?
14:57 < Guest57028>
/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:::
14:57 < tor7> that's obviously not correct...
14:58 < usa> OK, I am guessing you have only just added the lines to
~/.bashrc. Try typeing "source ~/.bashrc" and repeating the echo of $PATH
14:59 < Guest57028> that's what it gives
14:59 < usa> Did it get an extra colon on the end?
14:59 < Guest57028> and it doesn't give any thing for echo $GOBIN
14:59 < tor7> paste the lines exactly as you typed them here, in the same
order
15:00 < tor7> from you .bashrc
15:00 < usa> OK, so the problem is that GOBIN is NOT defined in your .bashrc
15:01 < usa> what does "grep GOBIN ~/.bashrc" say?

22:22 < usa> crimson_penguin, When you type "sudo echo $GOROOT" your shell
will expand the variable first, so sudo is called with 2 args, "echo" and
"/usr/local/bin". It will then execute that, and so of course it works. A better
test would be "sudo printenv GOROOT".
22:23 < crimson_penguin> usa: ohhh right, of course
22:24 < crimson_penguin> this is why I tend to just write perl scripts when
faced with anything remotely complex, rather than doing it on the command line
