05:10 < manveru> could someone help me interpret some C so i can write it in
Go?
05:11 < manveru> cpHashSetBin **prev_ptr = &set->table[idx]; // Pointer
to the previous bin pointer.
05:11 < manveru> cpHashSetBin *bin = set->table[idx]; // Pointer the the
current bin.
05:11 < manveru> i don't get what that does...
05:12 <+iant> the first line gets a pointer to an entry in an array
05:12 <+iant> the second line just gets the entry in the array
05:12 <+iant> the array is holding pointers itself
05:12 <+iant> so the first line is getting a pointer to a pointer
05:12 < manveru> oh... ok
05:13 < manveru> but how do you get two different things out of the same
table[idx] ?
05:13 < dignan> manveru: the &
05:13 <+iant> one is the address of that entry in the table
05:13 <+iant> the other is the value
05:13 < manveru> ah!
05:13 < manveru> thanks :)
05:14 < manveru> sorry, i'm a C newbie...
05:16 < manveru> iant: did you read my message the other day?
05:16 <+iant> probably but I don't remember it
05:16 -!- nettok__ [~netto@200.119.150.175] has joined #go-nuts
05:16 <+iant> what was it about?
05:16 < manveru> if structs S0 and S1 satisfy interface I, then it would be
nice if you could define func (i I) Foo() {} and call it as S0.Foo() and S1.Foo()
05:16 < manveru> given that Foo only relies on methods of I
05:17 <+iant> You want to define a method on an interface?
05:17 < manveru> yeah
05:18 <+iant> Someone else had a similar idea a while back
05:18 < manveru> i'm not sure what you guys think of it... it seemed so
obvious
05:18 -!- nettok_ [~netto@200.119.154.180] has quit [Ping timeout: 240 seconds]
05:19 <+iant> I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work
05:19 <+iant> Do you have a compelling use case?
05:19 <+iant> I don't know what people think of it either
05:20 < manveru> yeah, i'm drawing some shapes of different kinds, but their
Draw function is identical
05:21 < manveru> so right now i use Draw(Shape), Shape being an interface
that has X,Y,W,H functions
05:21 <+iant> you can write func Foo(i i) {}
05:21 <+iant> yeah
05:21 < manveru> but it seems kinda awkward
05:22 < manveru> i come from ruby, so i'm used to defining methods in the
most specific places possible
05:22 <+iant> I can't remember whether this was on the mailing list
05:22 <+iant> in the past
05:22 < manveru> and given that Go doesn't do polymorphism like Dylan, this
seemed like the way to go
05:24 < JBeshir> It feels like it kinda detracts from the purity of
interfaces as... well, interfaces, if you can define types on them
05:24 < JBeshir> Er, methods on them
05:24 <+iant> I suppose the method would just become part of the interface
05:24 < manveru>
http://groups.google.com/group/golang-nuts/browse_thread/thread/4d8f48524a513a1f
maybe?
05:24 <+iant> it's sort of like defining a default implementation for the
method
05:25 < manveru> exactly
05:25 < manveru> dunno, maybe implementations of the interface can
overshadow the default?
05:25 < JBeshir> "feels like" implementation inheritance.
05:26 <+iant> yes, I think that would happen automatically
05:26 <+iant> yeah
05:27 < manveru> oh... and is there actually an overhead if i access
somestruct.x via somestruct.X() ?
05:27 < manveru> gotta bench that
05:27 <+iant> the latter is a function call, the former is not
05:28 -!- thaostra [~joshua@pool-96-233-126-118.bstnma.fios.verizon.net] has quit
[Quit: Leaving]
05:28 < manveru> yeah, but it's just func (s *S) X() int { return s.x }
05:28 < manveru> so it could be inlined
05:28 <+iant> 6g/8g don't do inlining yet
05:28 <+iant> gccgo does
05:28 < manveru> oh, ok
05:29 < manveru> is that on the roadmap?
05:29 < manveru> http://golang.org/doc/devel/roadmap.html doesn't mention it

06:57 < manveru> cbeck: yeah, it's not a big issue really
06:58 < manveru> just something i found weird since X and Y are equal
06:58 < manveru> but it seems methods are attached to the name, not the type
06:58 < cbeck> But they are different types
06:58 < cbeck> For instance if I say type foo int
06:59 < cbeck> I can't pass a foo to a func that expects an int
06:59 < manveru> yeah, why is that?
06:59 < cbeck> which is at the heart of what you're talking about
06:59 < manveru> i mean, i can get int(somefoo) again
06:59 < cbeck> Because it's not just an alias, it's a type
06:59 < manveru> so why doesn't go do that for me if the types are
compatible?
07:00 < cbeck> because one of go's philosophies is that all casts should be
explicit
07:00 < manveru> hmh
07:01 < JBeshir> Because if two types are the same thing, portably and in
all contexts
07:01 < JBeshir> They should be the same time.
07:01 < JBeshir> And if they are not, then for some platform, that code is
casting between two different things.
07:01 < JBeshir> And there's all kinds of range limits and semantics of
named types and such involved there.
07:01 < JBeshir> And such should be explicit.
07:02 < manveru> i have 'type Float float64' in my code
07:02 < JBeshir> Why?
07:02 < manveru> http://gist.github.com/384868
07:03 < JBeshir> Why would you do such a thing
07:03 < manveru> it feels better
07:03 < napsy> you had too much java
07:04 < manveru> hehe
07:04 < manveru> i'm kinda allergic to toplevel functions
07:04 < manveru> even if i know that they're packaged properly
07:04 < JBeshir> And now, I think, you've learned that that weirdness
produces absolutely hideous code in Go?
07:05 < manveru> yeah
07:05 < manveru> guess i'll only convert to Float for the Clamp method
07:06 < napsy> why?
07:07 -!- ikaros [~ikaros@f052088188.adsl.alicedsl.de] has joined #go-nuts
07:07 < manveru> so i don't mix it up with the Clamp method of Vector
07:07 < JBeshir> It's in a different package.
07:07 < manveru> or is there some way i can extend the math package?
07:08 < JBeshir> Can't happen.
07:08 < JBeshir> It's in whatever package you put your code in.
07:08 < manveru> oh, not container/vector
07:09 < manveru> http://gist.github.com/384873
07:10 < napsy> your code is strange
07:10 < napsy> why does every vector method require pointers?
07:10 < manveru> i'm not sure
07:11 < manveru> it works... so i do it that way
07:11 < manveru> haven't used pointers before go, people say it's faster
because it doesn't copy structs or something
07:12 < manveru> suggestions welcome :)
07:12 -!- nettok [~netto@200.119.156.182] has quit [Ping timeout: 260 seconds]
07:18 < manveru> oh, ok
07:18 < manveru> The rule about pointers vs. values for receivers is that
value methods can be invoked on pointers and values, but pointer methods can only
be invoked on pointers.  This is because pointer methods can modify the receiver;
invoking them on a copy of the value would cause those modifications to be
discarded.
07:18 < manveru> so i should only use pointer receiver if i really need it
07:18 < kmeyer> yep.
07:19 < KirkMcDonald> Well.
07:19 < KirkMcDonald> You almost always use pointer receivers.
07:19 < kmeyer> nf: the rpm's been updated to patch out the requirement for
the env variables
07:19 < kmeyer> with minimal testing, it "works"
07:19 < manveru> KirkMcDonald: yeah
07:19 < kmeyer> things like Makefiles using $(GOROOT) and stuff don't work
07:19 < manveru> i hit strange behaviour some time when i started with go,
my structs wouldn't be modified
07:20 < manveru> so i switched to using pointers mostly
07:20 < manveru> time for some balance :)
07:21 < manveru> anw, cu later guys, i gotta do some more coding before this
is done
